Did you already know about the new Apple M2 processor with the new MacBook?

Last Monday, during its annual meeting, apple Takes back the veil on the successor to its M1 processor, which it calls Apple M2. This new chip is built with 5nm process, the CPU performance is 18% higher than the M1, and the GPU performance is 35% higher. Neural Engine is 40% faster. It also brings 50% more memory bandwidth than the M1 and supports up to 24GB of unified memory.

Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technology, commented on the Apple M2:

“The M2 unlocks the second generation of M-series chips that surpass the outstanding capabilities of the M1. With our relentless focus on power-efficient performance, the M2 offers a faster CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. With increased memory bandwidth, ProRes acceleration, and more With the addition of new features, the Apple M2 continues Apple’s tremendous pace of silicon innovation for the Mac.”

Apple says the M2 chip uses second-generation 5nm technology and contains 20 billion transistors, 25 percent more than its predecessor. These extra transistors enable the chip to handle more complex workloads, meaning users should see improvements when dealing with intensive tasks.

Apple’s new product launch wouldn’t be complete without attacking its competitors. According to the company, the M2 has nearly double the performance of the latest 10-core chips in Windows laptops. Compared to a 12-core chip in a PC, the M2 delivers nearly 90 percent more peak performance while consuming a quarter of the power.

Apple M2 is much faster than its predecessor

In addition to performance improvements, the Apple M2 unlocks cutting-edge technology in Apple computers. The company highlighted the following items:

  • The Neural Engine can process up to 15.8 trillion operations per second, more than 40% more than the M1.
  • The multimedia engine includes higher bandwidth video decoders supporting 8K H.264 and HEVC video.
  • Apple’s powerful ProRes video engine can play multiple 4K and 8K video streams.
  • Apple’s latest Secure Enclave offers best-in-class security.
  • A new Image Signal Processor (ISP) provides better image noise reduction.

In addition to the reduced energy usage offered by the Apple M2, the company says every chip it makes, from design to manufacture, will be 100 percent carbon neutral. This will help the company fulfill its commitment to protecting the planet.
