Aleix Espargaró won the MotoGP Catalunya GP with pole position, good speed and preference. However, he didn’t expect Fabio Quartararo to get off to a good start as he passed him in the first corner and opened up the necessary advantage to comfortably cross the finish line in first place. It was Diablo’s second win of the season, and it remains firmly in the championship lead.
Espargaró struggled to stay in second place as he was under pressure from two Pramac drivers. However, in a seemingly peaceful finish, the Granollers driver made a bizarre error as he thought the race was over a lap before the end and was losing position, leaving Jorge Martin Martín took second place, ahead of his Johann Zarco. Teammates — that is, both Pramac bikes on the podium in Barcelona.

▶️ How the 2023 MotoGP grid will look like
As happened throughout the weekend, the sun was shining brightly in Barcelona on Sunday. Before starting, the temperature was 30°C and the bitumen reached 56°C. Relative humidity was 46% and winds reached 13 km/h.
When leaving the track, the choice of tires is varied. Most riders opted for a medium head, but all four KTM bikes opted for a hard bike. In the rear, the majority also opted for the medium, while Jack Miller, John Zarco, Marco Bezecchi, Stefan Bullard, Pol Espargaro, Brad Binder, Suzuki and Franco Morbidelli chose the hardcore. Maverick Viñales is the only one who has ventured into soft clothing.
Before the start, however, Brad Binder, Álex Rins and Joan Mill ditched the hard tires in favor of a mid-rear.
The moment the lights went out on the straights of the Circuit de Catalunya, the spectators saw Aleix Espargaró make a good start and hold the lead in the first few meters, but Fabio Quartararo took the lead on the first corner.
By the way, at Turn 1, there was an accident that resulted in one of the winners: Pecco Bagnaia. The setbacks started from mid-upper Takamin, who fell, touched the rear of Peco and even collected Álex Rins, causing the Suzuki rider to fall horribly.
Thus, Jorge Martin jumped to third, against John Zarco, Pol Espargaro, Joan Mill, Luca Marini and Maverick Viñales.
On lap 3, Martín took second from Aleix when Quartararo started to lead. Fabio’s lead is already 1 second.
On lap 8, Bastianini suffered yet another setback this season: a crash at Turn 5 marked the second successive retirement of the Gresini driver, putting him further away from the title race in 2022. Fabio di Ginantonio also crashed shortly after, ending more of the Italian’s early involvement in the feud.
On the tenth lap, Alex finally broke Martin’s resistance and took second place. However, with 15 laps left, the home driver was already behind the Quartararo 3s3 who dominated the brawl.
Despite Aleix’s efforts to reduce Fabio’s advantage, the Frenchman managed to make it farther, leading by 3.950 at the start of lap 14. However, Martin didn’t lose contact with #41 and let Zarco try to rejoin the fray.
With nine laps remaining, Martín used the vacuum on the straight to glue and passed Aleix again at Turn 1 for second. Fourth, Zarco has been trying to get into the podium battle.
As you can see from the picture, Aleix’s right tire is badly worn. Even so, the Catalans are trying to keep in touch with Jorge in a bid to regain second place at Barcelona.
With four laps remaining, Aleix followed Martin on the straights and sprinted into Turn 1, using the RS-GP’s agility to quickly open up a bit of an advantage. Zarco followed, but not close enough to immediately threaten Pramac’s companion.
Aleix had a decent lead and cemented his place at the end of the race, but he made a strange mistake: he thought the race was over and started celebrating, dropping to fifth.
The Aprilia driver was back in the pits with a heartbroken, and in addition to the team, his wife Laura and their children Max and Mia, he had the support of Carmelo Ezpeleta, executive director of World Championship promoter Dorna , he personally went to the pits to give the Spaniard a hug.
