The State Department of Health (SES / SC) confirms through the Health Surveillance Superintendence (SUV) the detection of two new strains of the Ômicron variant of coronavirus in Santa Catarina. This is the recombinant subvariant XQ, identified in Florianópolis, and the subvariant BA.2.12.1, identified in Joinville.

The cases were reported to the Santa Catarina Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate (DIVE / SC) and diagnosed by the Santa Catarina Central Public Health Laboratory (LACEN / SC) using the RT-qPCR technique, and the samples were sent for genomic sequencing. National Reference Laboratory for Santa Catarina, from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ / RJ).

Subvariant Omicron XQ

This is a 32-year-old woman, resident of Florianópolis, who exhibited mild symptoms, such as: loss of taste, odor, headache, throat irritation and fatigue, and who was not hospitalized. The patient has a vaccination journal and travel history to Brasília in April. Sample collection for testing took place on May 4th.

Ômicron XQ is a recombinant strain that mixes the genome of two strains of the Ômicron variant BA.1.1 and BA.2. Most cases of the XQ variant have been detected in the UK, accounting for the majority of mild cases when it infects vaccinated humans.

Subvariant Omicron BA.2.12.1

This is a 9-year-old child, without vaccination registration, living in Joinville. The patient recorded mild symptoms, such as runny nose and cough, and was not hospitalized.

BA.2.12.1 is a strain of the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that is responsible for the recent cases of Covid-19 in the United States. It is more contagious than the original Omicron and has great potential for transmission. According to reports from the international scientific literature, it presents the characteristics of escape of antibodies induced by the infection. However, the antibodies produced by the vaccine are still extremely effective in preventing severe infection.

Current epidemiological scenario for Covid-19 in Santa Catarina

Currently, the BA.2 subline dominates the epidemiological scenario for Covid-19 in Santa Catarina and replaces the original subline of the Ômicron variant (BA.1.1), which is responsible for the large number of cases recorded in the months of January and February. 2022

Next week, LACEN / SC will release a new edition of Santa Catarina’s genomic surveillance bulletin with an update on the Coronavirus variant scenario.

DIVE / SC recommends that all persons aged 5 years and over protect themselves against Covid-19 through vaccination. In addition to completing the primary regimen with two doses or a single dose, it is of fundamental importance that booster doses are administered in all groups already released. All persons 12 years of age and older who have completed 4 months of primary treatment should receive the first booster dose. And people aged 60 and over should get an extra booster shot 4 months after receiving their first booster shot. In addition, the board warns of the importance of maintaining non-pharmacological preventive measures, such as hand washing, avoiding crowded places, leaving the surroundings ventilated, wearing the mask and staying in respiratory isolation if one has signs and symptoms.
