ZHA opens Seoul Design Museum to host metatech exhibition
Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) collaborates with Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) on exhibitionMeta Vision: The Future of the Present‘ in Seoul, South Korea. Designed by ZHA to foster the incitement, exchange of new ideas and showcase innovative technologies and media, the opening exhibition at the new DDP Design Museum explores ZHA’s work in areas ranging from digital technology to artificial intelligence and virtual reality, showcasing the company Recent projects, processes and research incorporating immersive technologies and new manufacturing techniques. The exhibition will be on view from May 26 to September 18, 2022.

Opened in 2014, DDP has become a cultural hub and meeting place in the Dongdaemun district of downtown Seoul. The exhibit details a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to developing digital design tools, as well as potential opportunities when working simultaneously between virtual and physical environments. The exhibition’s three areas: Innovation, Imagination and Interaction will provide visitors with a framework to explore the work of ZHA’s four research teams: Computation and Design (ZH CODE); Virtual Reality (ZHVR); Analysis and Insights (ZH A +I); and the social interaction process (ZHA Social).

area Innovation: Process and Research Highlights innovations in the built environment driven by ZHA’s processes and research. This introductory part of the exhibition focuses on collaborations between different disciplines that rely on research-based design processes and physical prototyping methods. Projects in the area include the recently completed Striatus, a 3D printed concrete bridge and a building platform for creating custom modular homes.
department Imagine: Design and Virtual Zones Highlights the imagination and communication of project vision and how it increases the possibility of working between the physical and digital realms. In this field, ZHA’s recent attempts to design virtual worlds or metaverses have been exposed, such as “Liberland”, an online city incubator, and “NFTism”, a virtual gallery space that explores architecture and social interaction.

area Interaction: Technology and Cooperation Demonstrates the continuous development of technology at various stages of the project to improve the user experience of physical, hybrid, augmented and virtual networked reality. In this area, showcased projects explore new interactive possibilities developed by ZHVR, including “Project Correl 1.0”, a multi-field collaborative experiment in virtual reality, showcasing the development of complex montages in virtual spaces, and mixed reality experiences. ‘LOOP’ ‘NEW WORLDS’, is a design simulation created by ZHVR for product testing and design development.

In addition, the exhibition marks the first appearance of RAS+ZHA: ‘Build the Metaverse‘, is a collaboration between ZHA and Refik Anadol Studio (RAS), bringing together architecture, art, technology and artificial intelligence. This project uses a multi-model AI algorithm to analyze the image and script data compiled and synthesized by ZHA. These algorithms produce comprehensive datasets that represent a portfolio of practical work. Visitors will experience the artwork in an immersive room, showcasing experimental perspectives on the upcoming metaverse.
